1991 Ford Ranger Rear End noise?

I have a 1991 Ford Ranger, 4x4, automatic and recently it started make a grinding/whinning noise. It sounds like it is coming from the rear of the truck and I have been told it's louder if your outside when I drive by. I pulled the rear diff apart and change most of the parts except the rear bearing. I also change the U-joins both at the rear end and at the carrier bearing but not the ones from the carrier to the tranny. I have been told by one mechanic that I shouldn't drive it and by another that it's fine and it's just a bearing somewhere that needs changing. The wheel bearings look good and are not leaking so I am left with only two things. The carrier bearing and tranny u-joints need changing or put in a new drivetrain from the tranny back. Has anyone else had this problem with early 90's Rangers?

Sounds like bearing noise. Any pro can diagnose the noise fairly easily and give you a price to repair.

You didn't say when , at what times it happens (like it happens at a set point or what)

I'd agree on possible bearing if it gets louder as you gain more speed.....

I'm asking the questions as rear ends also make noise if backlash and such aren't adjusted right, the pinion angle was changed (did you recently lower or raise the truck) and other things...

Usually U-joints make more vibration than noise I've found...
