A whining or humming noise when i accelerate, and sometimes when I am about to brake. Its not all the time, just ever so often. It comes from the rear and under the truck.
also i hear a clunking noise when i change the gears on the truck.
Now the truck rides fine on the highway at up to 70mph and also when its coasting.
i was told its my rear end and this is my only problem.
its a 93 suburban with a 350.
i was just told my rear end has absolutely no oil because the previous owners didnt take care of the truck. but I bought a big bottle of Lucas rear end oil and just put that one bottle on there.
I had my rear u joint changed but i still have the same problem
what is it? could it be the rear gear pinions or what?
Where are the mechanics that can help?
The humming is from the 'universal joint' in the drive train, which runs from the transmission to the rear end. The clunking is also from the same 'universal joint' when the transmission changed from one gear to another. If not repaired, one day it will just break off and hand down from the vehicle and you won't move. You'll have to be towed to a shop. The repair looks frightening when it breaks down on the road. However, it the shop is not to busy, it's a comparatively fast repair. And doesn't take to long.

your rear end is probably on its last leg. id keep good oil in it and be very nice to it. no burnouts or flooring.. keep an eye on the fluid. pull the top plug out u should have GL-5 (rear diff fluid) come out of the hole when u take the plug out. run it for about 100-150 miles and drain ALL the fluid out of the rear end. using a suction gun. then fill back up. check for metal shavings. there will normally be a few but shouldnt be alot. u will prolly find alot. keep changing and keep a close eye on it.
