First Direct frequently have a joining offer (was 拢100!!)

Their customer service is brilliant - you always get a real person on the phone 24/7and they've won loads of customer service awards.

As part of the HSBC group they're also one of the biggest safest banks going (they haven't borrowed any money from the government yet unlike most of the others)

You will have to use telephone and internet banking as they don't have a branch network - you can pay i at HSBC branches but everything else is on phone or internet.

They are all the same but HSBC is the safest at present
Try Nationwide Building Soc instead..... all the advantages of a bank, without the profit-hungry men at the top.

Plus you get commission-free ATM use overseas with their Flexaccount card.
they are all good at something in there own right (usually losing billions of pounds of our money and then expecting to be rewarded for doing so) Use a comparison website to find the best deal for you giving you the services you need from an account

To help you illuminate and home in

For an internet bank I would use the Coventry B.S.

As for banks with branches in the High Street.

I hate the Nat West, customer service is also disgusting where I live.

I quite like Nationwide.
HSBC is the safest of the banks at the moment but this won't really concern you unless you have thousands in savings to worry about.

I found Lloyds TSB offered the best quick and easy switching service. When you first apply to them, they try to offer the same deal that you had with your current bank. They try to offer a matching overdraft, they switch over all your direct debits and standing orders etc. It's all done when you go through the application form, so it's quick and easy to do. Natwest i've always found have the best customer service, i've never had to wait in a que to speak to someone over the phone and there usually English speaking people so there's no, %26quot;sorry can you say that again%26quot;. There online banking is the easiest to use, theres no long complicated codes to remember which i found to be LLoyds down fall, there internet banking is not the easiest to use.

Alliance and Leicester offer a wider range of bank accounts depending on your income each month your more likely to get an account tailored to your needs. some have added extras like free AA cover and so on.

These are the only banks i've ever personaly used, so unsure on the others!
I'm with Halifax and I have had no problem with them.
Nationwide. My branch allowed an hour for a meeting when setting up the account. Didn't need that long but I wasn't rushed, pressurised or talked into anything. They were very polite and I get the idea that they balance their books better and don't lend irresponsibly, maybe that is why they can offer a reasonable savings rate. I get the impression that they care for people. I might have been lucky - see what others say.
I swapped from Lloyds TSB ( worst service ever ) and now bank with the Alliance %26amp; Leicester... They are really good, great switching service, when you call them they are actually in England ( liverpool ) and o exactky what you tell them, They do not send me loads of junk mail and do not ever call me asking to to do financial reviews, and when I switched to them they even gave me 拢100. Not being biased I have also heard of good reports from First Direct....

PS Alliance %26amp; Leicester are doing the 拢100 give away agin if you switch to them
